Mystery turns on the 15th this month and we are celebrating!
This chimpanzee’s life could have been much different as he had both an unfortunate and fortunate arrival. Tragically, many chimps end up in bio medical research. Some are even born there – including Mystery. A female chimp, who had killed previous offspring, was not to be bred, but “mysteriously” she became pregnant again. Fortunately for Mystery, a new vet tech was told about this female. Several days later, he was alone with the chimps when he heard an odd noise and turned to see this female chimp drop a little baby on the floor. He immediately reacted and was able to remove Mystery to safety.
After three months under the care of a veterinarian, Mystery had a second life saving event as the vet flew with him to the Wildlife Waystation. And since both human and chimp infants both require constant care and nurturing a trained staff was enlisted to meet his needs 24 hours a day. But Mystery was also being introduced to three other chimps who were around one year old and eventually he was old enough to join this group. Today Mystery enjoys a wonderful life with his adopted family.

Chimpanzees are one of the most endangered of all species. One major threat is the massive destruction of their natural habitat. Once over one million chimps lived in Africa; in 2007 the population was estimated to be 190,000. Next is unlawful captivation as young chimps are caught and sold as pets, usually ending up in a miserable cage or worse. And for every one caught, ten chimps get killed in the process. And finally, there is the slaughtering of at least 4,000 chimps each year for bushmeat resulting in many more baby orphans…
